Busting Dental Myths
There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding oral health. We are here to set the record straight so you can make confident, informed decisions about your smile.
Myth
"It’s normal for gums to bleed a little when I brush or floss."
Fact
Healthy gums should never bleed. Bleeding is a primary sign of inflammation caused by tartar buildup. A professional prophylaxis is needed to remove the bacteria and stop the bleeding.
Myth
"Professional whitening with a lamp will wear down my tooth enamel."
Fact
When performed in a clinic, whitening is a safe chemical process, not a mechanical one. The activation lamp and professional-grade gels are designed to lift stains without damaging the structure or strength of your enamel.
Myth
"A root canal is the most painful dental procedure you can have."
Fact
Root canals don’t cause pain—they eliminate it. Modern anesthetics and endodontic techniques mean the procedure feels very similar to getting a standard filling, but it saves your natural tooth from extraction.
Myth
"If I want to fix a gap or a chip, I have to get expensive veneers."
Fact
Composite bonding is a faster, more affordable alternative. We can reshape your teeth in a single visit by bonding resin directly to the tooth, often with zero drilling or removal of your natural enamel.
Myth
"If I’m missing a back tooth that doesn't show, I don't need to replace it."
Fact
Every tooth matters! A missing tooth can cause your other teeth to shift, leading to bite problems, jaw pain, and bone loss. Implantology or Prosthetics keep your entire jaw aligned and healthy.
Myth
"Braces and aligners are only for children and teenagers."
Fact
Teeth can be moved at almost any age as long as the gums and bone are healthy. Many adults choose Orthodontics to improve their dental health and confidence later in life.
Myth
"Putting a gem on my tooth will leave a permanent hole."
Fact
Not at our clinic! We use a professional dental adhesive to bond the gem to the surface. It is a non-invasive process that leaves the enamel perfectly intact and can be safely removed whenever you like.
Myth
"Reshaping your gums involves a long, painful recovery with lots of bleeding."
Fact
By using electrosurgery, we provide a precise contouring of the gums that cauterizes as it works. This means almost no bleeding during the procedure and a significantly faster healing time than traditional methods.
Myth
"All dental crowns eventually show a dark, metallic line at the gum line."
Fact
That dark line is caused by old metal-ceramic technology. Modern Zirconia and E.max crowns are entirely metal-free and translucent, meaning they look natural and stay beautiful even if the gum line shifts over time.
Myth
"If I use a high-end electric toothbrush at home, I don’t need a professional cleaning."
Fact
Even the best toothbrush cannot remove tartar (calculus) once it has hardened. Only a professional prophylaxis can safely clear these deposits, especially in hard-to-reach areas and under the gum line where disease starts.
Myth
"Dental implants are prone to 'rusting' or causing allergies in the mouth."
Fact
Implants are made of medical-grade titanium, which is biocompatible, meaning the body accepts it as natural bone. In collaboration with a specialized surgeon, we ensure the material integrates perfectly for a lifetime of stability.
Myth
"Sensitive teeth are just something you have to live with forever."
Fact
Sensitivity is often caused by exposed 'tubules' in the dentin or thinning enamel. During your prophylaxis, we can apply specialized treatments and fluoridation that seal these areas, significantly reducing or eliminating cold and heat sensitivity.
Myth
"You have to take your dentures out because they will eventually become loose and fall out while talking."
Fact
A poorly fitted denture is the problem, not the treatment. We focus on custom-crafted prosthetics that utilize the natural contours of your mouth for a secure, stable suction, allowing you to speak and eat with total confidence.
Myth
"A hard toothbrush is better because it 'scrubs' the stains and tartar away more effectively."
Fact
Hard bristles can cause gum recession and permanent wear on your enamel. Tartar is too hard to be brushed away and requires a professional prophylaxis; for daily care, a soft-bristled brush is the safest and most effective way to remove soft plaque without hurting your mouth.
Myth
"You need an expensive electric toothbrush to get a truly clean mouth."
Fact
A traditional toothbrush used with the correct 45-degree technique is incredibly effective. The most important thing is your consistency and your technique, not the price of the brush.
Myth
"Since my bridge is made of Zirconia or Ceramic, it can't get a cavity, so I don't need to clean under it."
Fact
While the bridge itself won't decay, the natural teeth supporting it (the 'abutments') certainly can. If plaque stays under the bridge, it can cause decay in the support teeth or lead to gum disease, which could cause the bridge to fail.
Myth
"Waterpiks are only for people with braces."
Fact
Waterpiks are a 'must-have' for anyone with bridges, implants, or deep gum pockets. They reach areas that traditional floss simply cannot touch, making your home care much more effective.
Myth
"A bridge is better because it’s 'simpler' than getting an implant."
Fact
While a bridge is faster, it requires the removal of healthy enamel from the neighboring teeth to support the structure. An implant is often the 'healthier' choice for the rest of your mouth because it stands entirely on its own.
Myth
"Dental implants are painful and take years to finish."
Fact
The surgical placement is performed with precision and anesthesia, making it very comfortable. While the healing takes a few months, the result is a tooth that feels, looks, and functions exactly like your natural ones.
